Rowr, Zhan Shen

Silly child that I am… I love manga.  I feel I can learn a lot from the different forms it takes, the different patterns that are put together by manga-ka.  The feeling, the flow, the musicality… I have tried v. hard to get some musicality in my writing, and I feel I can learn a lot from them.

Then my cous started getting into manga, too, and she found my fav, Mars, by Fuyumi Soryo.  Ooh, la la, Rei!  She told me it had been made into a live action drama.  Huh?  S’quis me?  A couple years after our discussion, I decided to look it up again, and found it.  How bizarre!  Filmed in Taiwan, so it’s in Chinese, and they changed all the names.  The weirdest thing was, I started to recognize the characters as soon as they walked on screen.  I knew who they were going to be. The outfits, even, were usually v. close (except for Kira’s! she didn’t look, act, or dress at all like Kira throughout the entire drama!).  They found almost the exact same jackets and everything that Rei always wore.  Wow, I said!  I was hooked.  And then I pulled out my old manga… and found that even though I thought the characters all looked EXACTLY alike, it wasn’t true.  But every character can look like a couple people… and still be sooooo consistent with the author’s guidelines, that it totally fooled my memory.  I’d like to see something I write translated to screen someday… I’ve always been a sucker for book to movie, checking out both and comparing.  Someday.

I must say, my absolute fav thing they did in Zhan Shen was with Masao’s theme music.  The villain, this hopelessly warped dude, and every time we saw him, the choirs of angels would sing!

If only I could learn the world.

Pen Pricks

I’ve had five microfictions published in the latest online issue of Pen Pricks.  And some day I will conquer the world of longer fiction!  Some day I will conquer a world that has nothing to do with Valentine’s Day… Ahem.  How does the un-V-day girl get all the V-day stuff performed?  When Dates Attack, the experimental theatre vaudevillesque show, written in two weeks and performed in two with a cast of six and one wonderful stage Mom.  Then Prehistoric Dating performed at the Shelterbelt’s “From Shelterbelt with Love”.  They even did promo pics for the show out of my characters…

I rather liked the micro fic format for a change of pace.  It’s very haiku.  You only have 55 words to say what you want.  If you have an elaborate idea, you have to cannibalize another sentence to make room for it.  It’s also v. good for rewriting skills, to get in what you want, to get to the point, check your arc, check your completeness, get rid of unwanted words, make sure it flows and makes sense.  Give a smidge of character, a smidge of plot, a smidge of scene, and bam, you got a story.  It was rather freeing, working in such a limiting realm.  Unsure if I have the time right now to apply this to longer stories–to make sure every section of 55 words in a 5000 word story flows and has each of these elements… too needle in a haystack…

Happy Birthday, Danny-boy, El Guapo, General Mrowr 😉  (Met on his b-day, him wearing camo pants, a Monty Python killer rabbit T, fedora, and a scowl.  I guess it’s easy to dislike your own birthday when you’re a boy on Valentine’s Day.  To only like the Massacre…)
